Is Chiropractics Right for You?

There have long been debates on how effective chiropractic adjustments really are. Anytime someone twists your neck or back, the issue of safety is also always there. There are folks in Charleston that will swear by their chiropractor; and there are folks in the low country that simply swear at them.

How effective is chiropractics? I struggle for years with pain in my right shoulder. I tried drugs, physical therapy, ice packs, heat packs, rest and exercise. Nothing helped. Then for Christmas a few years ago, my eldest daughter got me a coupon for a one hour therapeutic massage. While I was there I let Dr. Paul Friedman at the Orange Chiropractic on Sam Rittenberg take a look at the shoulder. After several more massages, to get some nasty knots out of my back, and some “adjustments” by Dr. Friedman I had more flexibility and strength in my shoulder than I had had in years.

For me it has been effective. For others in Charleston, particularly those with lower back pain, joint pain including the wrist, knee, shoulder and ankle, a good chiropractor can be a godsend.

How safe is chiropractics? Done improperly or with the wrong technique, a patient can leave the office in worse condition than when they arrived. Some Charleston residences are shaken the first time they hear the “cracking” sound that often accompany an adjustment. When done correctly, chiropractics is an attractive alternative to pain pill and discomfort.

But, is chiropractics right for you? A lot will depend on the confidence you have in your chiropractor. In the greater Charleston area, which includes West Ashley and Mt. Pleasant, there are many certified chiropractors to choose from. Confidence is important so do some shopping. Most if not Charleston area chiropractors will offer a free consultation. With over 50 to choose from in West Ashley alone, they’re should be a chiropractor you will like and trust.
